According to NASA, 2011 was the 9 th warmest year ever
The NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), based in New York, check the temperature of the earth's surface on an ongoing basis and has recently published an updated set of data which compares the temperatures around the world in 2011 with the average temperature Global since mid-20 th century. The comparison shows that the Earth continues to warm temperatures recorded several decades ago. The average temperature around the world last year, was 0.92 degrees F (0.51 C) higher than that recorded in the middle of last century.
"We know that the planet is absorbing more energy than it emits," said the director shall the GISS, James E. Hansen. "We continue to have a trend toward higher temperatures. Even considering the effects of ing induced by the strong influence of La Nina and low solar activity we have had for several years, 2011 has been one of the 10 warmest years in history."
The difference between 2011 and the warmest year recorded by GISS (in 2010) is 0.22 degrees F (0.12 C). However, because of the large natural variability of climate scientists do not expect temperatures to continue to grow steadily year after year. Nevertheless, scientists foresee a continuation of the uptrend.
The first 11 years of the 21 st century have recorded temperatures considerably higher than the middle and at the end of 20 °, continues Hansen. The only year of the 20 th century into the top 10 was 1998.
The current temperatures are largely caused by increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. These gases absorb infrared radiation emitted by the Earth and trap rather than it flowing back into space. The progressive increase in the concentration of these gases has caused an increase in thermal energy and thus have increased average global temperatures.
The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was about 285 parts per million in 1880, when he began recording the data from the GISS. In 1960, the average concentration was increased to about 315 parts per million. Now exceeds 390 parts per million and continues to grow at an accelerated pace.
The data from the GISS pro-dictator is compiled from weather data from over 1,000 weather stations around the world, from satellite observations of sea surface temperature measurements from the Antarctic research station. A network of public computers is used to calculate the difference between the temperature of the surface in a given month and the average temperature recorded in the same location during the period 1951-1980. Three decades which represent the basis for the analysis.
The study has obtained results very similar to the analysis performed by the Met Office Hadley Centre in the UK and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
